Convert AVIF to JPG

AVIF is a newer, very efficient image format based on the AV1 video codec. Browsers display it, but many apps and upload forms don’t accept it yet. Convert AVIF files to JPG here.

About AVIF

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) was developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It typically produces smaller files than JPG and WebP at the same visual quality, and supports transparency and HDR. Websites increasingly serve it to browsers, so images you save from the web may arrive as .avif files.

Decoding in older browsers

Kilomill uses your browser’s own AVIF decoder when it has one, and otherwise falls back to libavif compiled to WebAssembly, so the conversion works even where the browser itself can’t display AVIF.

HDR and wide-gamut AVIF images are converted to standard 8-bit sRGB JPGs, which can look slightly flatter than on an HDR screen.

Questions and answers

Can I convert AVIF to PNG?

Yes. Choose PNG under Output format, for example to keep transparency.

Is AVIF better than JPG?

For file size, yes: AVIF is usually much smaller at the same quality. For compatibility, JPG is still the safest choice.

Is there a limit on file size or number of images?

There is no upload limit because there is no upload. The practical limit is your device’s memory: images up to 100 megapixels (and 16,384 pixels per side) are accepted. Large batches are processed a few at a time.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The images are read and compressed by code running in this browser tab, and the results are created in your device’s memory. Nothing is sent anywhere, which you can confirm in your browser’s developer tools (Network tab) while you work. See Privacy.
