Kilomill HEIC to JPG

Convert HEIC to JPG

iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format). Windows, Android, many websites and older software can’t open them. Convert them to JPG here: the photos are decoded on your device, never uploaded.

  • No upload: runs in your browser
  • Batch + ZIP download
  • No sign-up, no watermark

How to convert HEIC photos to JPG

  1. Get the HEIC files onto this device (AirDrop, iCloud Photos, a USB cable, or email them to yourself as files).
  2. Add them here. The HEIC decoder (about 1.5 MB) downloads once, the first time you add a HEIC file.
  3. Download the JPGs one by one or as a ZIP. Adjust quality, size or a KB limit first if you need to.

Why iPhones use HEIC

HEIC stores an image compressed with HEVC (H.265), the same technology used for video, so a photo takes noticeably less space than a JPG of similar quality. The downside is compatibility: support outside Apple devices depends on extra codecs. JPG is less efficient but opens everywhere, which is what you want for forms, email and printing services.

Stop the iPhone from taking HEIC photos

On the iPhone, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC, so convert those here.

Converting with Kilomill also removes the EXIF metadata from the JPG, including the GPS location an iPhone records by default. Keep the HEIC original if you want to keep that information.

What is kept and what changes

  • Orientation: the rotation saved by the camera is applied, so portraits stay upright.
  • Live Photos and bursts: only the main still image is converted.
  • Depth and HDR data: not carried over; the JPG is standard 8-bit sRGB.

Questions and answers

Can I open HEIC files on Windows?

Windows needs extra extensions from the Microsoft Store to show HEIC files, and many programs still can’t open them. Converting to JPG avoids the problem.

Is HEIC better quality than JPG?

At the same file size HEIC usually looks better, or at the same quality it is smaller. Converting to JPG at quality 80–90 keeps the photo looking the same, but the file will be larger than the HEIC.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead?

Yes: choose PNG under Output format. PNG files of photos are large; JPG is the better choice unless you need lossless pixels.

Why is the first HEIC conversion slower?

The HEIC decoder (libheif compiled to WebAssembly, about 1.5 MB) is downloaded the first time you add a HEIC file. After that it is cached by your browser.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The images are read and compressed by code running in this browser tab, and the results are created in your device’s memory. Nothing is sent anywhere, which you can confirm in your browser’s developer tools (Network tab) while you work. See Privacy.
