File size

For JPG, WebP and AVIF. 70–80 is hard to tell from the original. PNG uses smart colour reduction instead (see Advanced).

Aims at or below the maximum counting 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, so the file passes whether a site counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB.

What to expect

  • The file gets bigger. PNG stores photos losslessly, so a PNG of a photo is typically several times larger than the JPG. That is normal.
  • Quality does not improve. Any JPEG artefacts already in the photo are kept; PNG simply stops new ones being added.
  • No transparency is added. A JPG has no transparent areas, so the PNG won’t either. Removing a background is a different task.

For this conversion the PNG mode is set to Lossless under Advanced, so the PNG has exactly the pixels of the decoded JPG. Switch to Smart if a smaller file matters more, for example for a scanned document or a simple graphic.

Good reasons to convert JPG to PNG

  • You are going to edit the image several times and don’t want each save to degrade it.
  • A website, app or print service accepts PNG only.
  • The image is a graphic (a chart or a logo) that was wrongly saved as JPG, and you want to stop further loss before cleaning it up.

Questions and answers

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. Detail lost when the JPG was created can’t be recovered. PNG preserves what is there exactly.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG is lossless. For photos that means many more bytes than JPG’s lossy compression. Use Smart PNG mode, or keep JPG, if size matters.

Can I make the background transparent?

No. The converter keeps the image as it is; it does not remove backgrounds.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The images are read and compressed by code running in this browser tab, and the results are created in your device’s memory. Nothing is sent anywhere, which you can confirm in your browser’s developer tools (Network tab) while you work. See Privacy.
