WebP to PNG or WebP to JPG?

WebP to PNG or JPG
The image is…Convert to
A logo, icon, sticker or cut-out with a transparent backgroundPNG (this page): transparency is kept
A screenshot or graphic you want to editPNG: no further compression loss while you work on it
A photo for sharing, email or a formJPG: several times smaller than PNG

Lossless or smart PNG

This page saves lossless PNGs: every pixel of the decoded WebP, including soft transparent edges, is kept. If the files are only for display and should be small, choose Advanced → PNG output → Smart, which reduces them to at most 256 colours. Large photos stored as PNG get big; that is expected, because PNG does not discard detail.

Animated WebP files are converted to a still PNG of the first frame.

Questions and answers

Will the transparent background stay transparent?

Yes. PNG supports full transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are kept exactly.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?

WebP compresses much better than PNG, and lossy WebP discards detail that PNG then stores in full. Use Smart PNG mode for smaller files, or keep the WebP if your software can open it.

Is quality lost converting WebP to PNG?

No further quality is lost: PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly. Any loss already in a lossy WebP stays.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The images are read and compressed by code running in this browser tab, and the results are created in your device’s memory. Nothing is sent anywhere, which you can confirm in your browser’s developer tools (Network tab) while you work. See Privacy.
